The weekly relationship and divorce consultation hour for residents of Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten, and De Meern started last month. The consultation hour is for residents who need information, advice, and support regarding relationship problems and divorces. For example, about communication with your (ex-)partner or how to shape co-parenting after a divorce. You can also receive information about finances and legal matters.
Professionals from Buurtteams Utrecht, among others, take a broad look at what is needed and what support is appropriate. Parents can visit the divorce consultation hour for accessible information, advice, and support regarding a wide range of issues surrounding relationship problems and divorces. Together, they explore what can help to separate as amicably and respectfully as possible, so that parents can continue to fulfill their roles effectively and children experience as few adverse consequences from the divorce as possible. In complex divorces, it is common for children to suffer from the consequences later on, for example in the form of anxiety, stress, and behavioral problems. In this way, the municipality helps parents in an accessible manner to ensure the process runs more smoothly.
Dennis de Vries, Alderman for Youth: “Divorce is a profound and emotional event for many people. A lot comes at you in a short time: from practical matters such as housing and finances, to properly organizing the care of the children. It is good that we, as a municipality, stand alongside families. By helping parents to structure everything as well as possible, we prevent a relationship breakdown from escalating. For children, a parental divorce is already very impactful, let alone when tensions and arguments get out of hand. We often see that children need youth support as a result. With the relationship and divorce consultation hour, we want to contribute to ensuring that children suffer as little as possible from a divorce.”
The consultation hour takes place every Monday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the library in Leidsche Rijn, Brusselplein 2. Initially, the consultation hour is intended for people from Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten, and De Meern. If the consultation hour proves successful, the municipality will expand it to other parts of the city. The consultation hour is primarily intended for people with children, but people without children who need help with their divorce or relationship problems can also attend.
Further in 2026
The divorce consultation hour is part of the broader approach of the Municipality of Utrecht to relationship and divorce issues. In 2026, in addition to the consultation hour, the divorce team will also acquire a consultancy function, allowing professionals to request support with stalled cases.
In addition, there are various projects aimed at strengthening relationships. For instance, the Al Amal Foundation organizes gatherings to prepare residents for marriage and help them learn to deal with relationship problems (better). Young parents can also make free use of the online course from OudersInc.
